Health Insurance

Health insurance is an important part of working life in Czechia. It affects your access to healthcare, and, in some situations, it can become important very quickly, especially if you change jobs or stop working for a while.

Health insurance affects your access to healthcare, your monthly deductions, your responsibilities if your work situation changes.

Many graduates assume everything is automatic forever once they start working. In practice, coverage often depends on your current work status.

For many employees, health insurance is arranged through employment. That is the easy part. The more confusing moments usually come later, when a contract ends, a new one starts, or your work setup changes.

How It Usually Works

If you are employed under a standard employment contract, health insurance is usually handled through your employer. This often means:

  • you are part of the public health insurance system,
  • contributions are paid automatically through payroll,
  • your employer handles the main reporting connected to your job.

Health insurance needs extra attention if:

  • you are changing jobs,
  • you stop working,
  • there is a gap between one job and the next,
  • you work under a contract with different rules (like DPP or DPČ),
  • you move from employment to self-employment.

In these situations, do not assume your coverage continues without interruption.

Common Situations After You Start Working

Starting Your First Job

Starting Your First Job

If this is your first job in Czechia after graduation, check:

  • whether your employer has everything they need from you,
  • when your coverage starts,
  • whether your contract type affects how insurance works.
Changing Employers

Changing Employers

If you move to a new job, check:

  • when your current job officially ends,
  • when the new one begins,
  • whether there is any gap between them.

A short gap can still matter.

A Break Between Jobs

A Break Between Jobs

If you stop working for a while, this is the moment to look into your health insurance situation properly.

Do not assume that coverage continues in the same way after employment ends. If there is a gap before your next job, find out what applies to you as early as possible. In most cases, you will need to cover that gap yourself.

Working on DPP or DPČ

Working on DPP or DPČ

If you are not working under a standard employment contract, insurance rules may be different.

Before signing, check:

  • whether health insurance is included,

  • whether your income level matters,

  • what happens if this is your only job.

Good to Remember

Check for insurance gaps.

Know your contract type.

Keep your documents.

Ask HR when in doubt.

What to Check Regularly and Keep in Order

What to check regularly

  • whether your employment is still active,
  • whether your contract type has changed,
  • whether there is any break in your work history,
  • whether your employer details and records are correct.

Documents worth keeping

  • your employment contract,
  • contract amendments,
  • payslips,
  • confirmations from your employer, if relevant,
  • any health-insurance-related documents you receive.
